VHS, DVD & Video

Video and film was an integral part of Crass' live performances and their live aesthetic. Fortunately, most of the material used has survived and both Gee Vaucher and Mick Duffield's work with the band is available on DVD through Exitstencil Press. However, very little footage of Crass actually playing live exists. Gigs were mostly performed in low light conditions that were not conducive to video recording and what snippets are available tend to of low quality. For a playlist of Crass-related video material visit the Art of Crass on YouTube.

Christ the Movie - Mick Duffield (VHS, 1990; DVD, 2016)

Christ the Movie is made up of three films, 'Autopsy', 'Choosing Death' and 'Yes Sir, I Will' (Crass). Made by Mick Duffield in the punk rock era in response to the UK's gloomy political and economic bankruptcy of the mid-1970s and 80s.

These films were shown at Crass gigs and contributed to the atmosphere of each performance. It was released on VHS in 1990 and has recently been re-released on DVD, with an accompanying booklet, by Exitstencil Press.

Semi-detached - Gee Vaucher (VHS, 2001; DVD, 2015)

Semi-detached is collection of films made by Gee Vaucher, member of Crass and the artist behind their groundbreaking graphic art. Made between 1978-1984, these films are visual extensions of the music and ideas of Gee and Crass and were shown during all of their gigs.

The films were released on VHS in 2001 and then on DVD by Exitstencil Press in 2015. The DVD includes the songs Reality Whitewash, Shaved Women, Smother Love, Mother Earth, Bomb and Yes Sir, I Will, which gives you the choice of the original audio track or a reworking by Penny Rimbaud. It also comes with a 50-page booklet.
